Alexander Hamilton is the Necessary Face of the $10 Bill

By on Jun 19, 2015 | 1 comment

The U.S. Treasury plans to replace one of the historical male faces on some denomination of paper currency with a woman influential in American history. It is not the first time a woman has appeared on United States money – think, for example, of the Susan B. Anthony dollar – but it is time for another. Exactly who will now grace one of our newly printed bills remains to be seen. The Treasury has been asking Americans who they would like to see. Most of the potentials are good candidates for the position: Harriet Tubman, Eleanor Roosevelt and Rosa Parks, among others. A more contentious question is who will be replaced. At first, Andrew Jackson seemed primed to be removed from the $20 bill. But this week, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced that it would Alexander Hamilton that would be replaced on the $10 bill.*  (Or rather that Hamilton would share the $10 with a woman; “Mr....

New York City’s Minimum Wage Hike Idea Is Maximum Stupidity

By on Apr 16, 2015 | 2 comments

New York City comptroller Scott Stringer issued a report in support of a minimum wage hike. From Yahoo!: According the comptroller’s analysis, raising the minimum wage would impact 1.5 million New Yorkers and add a collective $10 billion to their salaries. Gee, sounds like a no-brainer! It begs the question though: if hiking the minimum wage leads to revenue increases for companies, why don’t said companies just simply pay their employees more? Simple: wages should be a function of the level of productivity (i.e., the revenue said labor brings to the business). Simply raising the costs of labor does not bring about an increase in revenue or productivity. Would paying a burger flipper $15 instead of the ~$9 he or she earns in NYC bring in more customers? An increase in the minimum wage would also save the city between $200 and $500 million annually in Food Stamps and Medicaid, and...

Free Markets Work – Walmart Hikes Wages

By on Feb 19, 2015 | 2 comments

Without coercion, statute, administrative ruling, or other fiat, Walmart has decided to #raisethewage to half a million of its employees: Discount retail giant Wal-Mart (WMT) will give a half million employees pay raises, the company said Thursday. The retailer also reported a mixed quarterly report. The move ensures hourly associates earn at least $1.75 above today’s federal minimum wage, or $9 per hour, in April. By Feb. 1, 2016, current associates will earn at least $10 per hour. Some states already have a minimum wage at or above $9 per hour, including California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Oregon, Washington, Vermont and Rhode Island. What’s behind this move? First of all, it’s good public relations. Walmart has been the subject of protests by the so-called “living wage” advocates. As discussed more thoroughly here, a mandated...

Sheldon Silver, Democrat Speaker of NYS Assembly, Arrested For Corruption

By on Jan 22, 2015 | 0 comments

A Democrat arrested on corruption charges?!  The devil, you say! Hell has apparently frozen over, because one of the biggest corruptocrats to hit New York since Boss Tweed has finally been put in cuffs and hauled off to jail for “using the power and influence of his official position to obtain for himself millions of dollars of bribes and kickbacks masked as legitimate income.” Sheldon Silver, the longtime speaker of the New York state Assembly, was arrested Thursday morning on corruption charges.   Silver showed up at 26 Federal Plaza in downtown Manhattan at 8 a.m. where he was arrested by FBI agents.   He’s set to make his initial appearance before a federal judge Thursday afternoon.   Silver’s spokesman, Michael Whyland, declined comment before the arrest.   US Attorney Preet Bharara scheduled a press conference at 1 p.m. to detial the charges.   The...

Gunmen Shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ Storm Charlie Hebdo Office Killing 12, WH Unaware Of Motivation

By on Jan 7, 2015 | 0 comments

At approximately 10:30 GMT masked gunmen shouting “Allahu Akbar” stormed the offices of the satirical French Magazine Charlie Hebdo, known for their Muhammad cartoons, killing 12 people, including 2 police officers. Although the White House issued a statement condemning the attacks, they’re unsure as to the motivation. Probably because “‘The future must not belong to those who slander the Prophet of Islam’ - Obama, 2012. I completely disagree.   The future must not belong to those who commit murder in their God’s name. Much like you cannot classify all Baptist’s as Westboro, you shouldn’t classify all Muslim’s as Jihadist’s. However, in this instance I feel the need to echo Keith Powell and label the people who kill in the name of their religion “extremist nutjobs.” Dear extremist nutjobs: if you truly believe your God...

When Government Fails

By on Jan 7, 2015 | 0 comments

People who know me know that I’m an advocate for limited government. There’s a reason for that. When government stretches itself too thing–particularly by extending itself beyond the scope of its delegated or enumerated powers–it fails. We are seeing the failure of government right now. Governments, domestic, national, and foreign, are simply flat-out failing to keep their citizens safe. Look at New York City. Crime is at an all-time low. There is a complacency among our “betters” in City Hall. This complacency permits a community organizer like Bill de Blasio to put pet political issues over the police here in New York. What is the end result of this? Professional protesters spitting in the face of cops, throwing fake blood on the police commissioner, and an environment where cops are executed in broad daylight or are routinely shot at by criminals....
